When winter comes along, the cold dry air can cause many problems. Besides leaving your lips chapped, your hands cracked, and your skin dry, it could also be increasing your risk of catching the flu. The influenza survives better in low-humidity conditions, making it more likely to spread from one person to another. Humidifiers In High Risk PlacesPlacing a humidifier in places where the spread of the flu is a real risk could help prevent it. This includes areas like intensive care units and homes with sick or at risk children. However, you do have to make sure that no one has sensitivity to mold or mold spores, and not to keep the air so humid that mold grows. Flu Transmission The best way to prevent flu is to understand how it is spread. So far, the virus' ability to survive is affected by how much humidity is in the air. However, researchers still do not know how and why the flu spreads from one person to another. They also do not know why some areas of the world have a “flu season” where in the winter the cases of flu increase and during the summer there are hardly any. But now research is thinking that there is a link between flu and humidity. Humidity Researchers took a look at humidity and flu, but to understand the results you have to understand relative and absolute humidity. Relative humidity is the amount of water that the air is holding. So when the relative humidity is at 60 percent, then the air is holding 60% of the total capacity of water. The warmer air is, then the more water vapor it can hold. Absolute humidity measures the actual amount of water that is in the air. The higher the relative humidity, the easier flu is spread. When you figure out the absolute humidity, the connection is even stronger. This could explain why there are such pronounced flu seasons in areas where there is a definite change of seasons. The Results At the highest levels of humidity, less than 20% of the flu viruses were still capable of infecting others after an hour. At the opposite side of the spectrum, in the driest conditions 80% of the flu virus was still viable. After nearly a day, the viruses at the highest levels of humidity were all dead, while 60% still survived in the dry conditions. What This Means For You However, these tests are only done in a lab, with no scientific evidence in the real world. However, if you live in a drier climate where flu is a problem, running a humidifier in your home or office could mean the difference between catching the flu or not. Since the transmission of the flu virus is not completely understood, it remains to be seen if it is more or less effective than other preventative methods, such as frequent hand washing or wearing a protective mask. Running a humidifier could be just one more thing that you can do to keep your family from getting sick this winter. Trust that you found this flu article useful.
