Eating Your Way to Good Health
Improve your health with good
nutrition
One of the most
important aspects of good health is learning how to eat right.
Many of us don’t know the foods that are good for us or aren’t
interested in eating foods that provide good nutrition.
Although a younger person may get by with poor nutrition, as
one ages, poor eating habits begin to take a toll on your
health.
Develop
Good Eating Habits Early in Life
Poor eating
habits are very difficult to break. It’s a cycle that tends to
start in childhood and will continue throughout life unless you
stop it before it takes a toll on your health. The easiest way
to break poor eating habits is to never develop them from the
start, but that doesn’t happen for most of us. Sadly many of
the poor eating habits we develop are because of the way our
parents raised us.
One of the worst
things parents can do is teaching their children if they don’t
like something, they don’t have to eat it. Although at a very
young age the paediatrician may tell the parents of a very
finicky child to give them whatever they will eat, there is a
time to end that cycle and encourage your children to try other
foods.
Another mistake
parents make is forcing them to eat everything on their plate,
especially since most parents tend to give a child more than he
or she can possibly eat. This early training creates an adult
who will feel the need to eat large portions of food even after
they have filled their need for nutrition. Eating until you are full is
all that is necessary, and the portions should be small enough
that you do not need to waste food.
It is better to
take smaller portions and take more if you are still hungry
than to be tempted to overeat. Our parents mean well, but only
in the past decade or so has it come to light how detrimental
these early patterns are as a child grows into an
adult.
Enjoying
Healthier Foods
Healthier foods
do not need to be bland or tasteless by any means. Even if you
don’t like vegetables that are good for your health, find a way
to serve them that will appeal to your taste buds. For example,
maybe you don’t like broccoli with just salt, pepper, and a
little bit of butter—find seasonings that appeal to you. Maybe
you would like to add garlic powder and cook them with some
carrots and cauliflower in some olive oil. There are many
different ways to prepare healthy foods so that you will enjoy
them.
The healthier
lean meats baked or broiled may not be appealing to your taste
buds in the beginning, but as you learn to experiment with
different seasonings, you will begin to choose herbs and spices
that will make the leanest meats appetizing. Eating healthier
foods doesn’t mean you need to bake chicken or fish without any
seasonings but rather that you learn to use seasonings that are
healthy. Choosing olive oil over vegetable is a good place to
start along with choosing foods that have no Trans
fat.
Making
Healthy Choices
If you avoid
processed foods and choose fresh herbs for seasoning, you will
have a tasty meal that is also healthy. Snacks of fresh fruits
and vegetables instead of high calorie sweets will also make a
big difference in your general health. Learning to eat healthy
after years of poor eating habits will take time and
adjustment, but you will notice a difference in your health
because of these lifestyle changes.
