The sad part is even schools that serve lunches are guilty even in places where nutritional guidelines are in place.

It seems that our children are being permitted to make selections for meals, and thus even in places that should be looking out for their best interests, they are indirectly allowed to choose the foods they eat - pizza, chicken nuggets, hamburgers, tacos and much more. The sad part is that with so many two-income families today, neither children nor adults have very many well balanced meals.

The lack of good nutrition not only causes obesity, but it also contributes to health problems such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, poorly functioning immune system, and many other diseases and conditions. The worst problem among all of the possibilities is that of the development of poor eating habits. Once you develop poor eating habits, the cycle is very hard to break. The easiest way to avoid developing poor eating habits is to eat well balanced meals from the start. Some of the ways you can do that include the following:

  • Limit or eliminate your consumption of fast foods
  • Avoid processed foods
  • Make healthy selections when dining out
  • Eat healthy snacks such as fruit and vegetables instead of sweets
  • Eat more chicken and fish instead of beef and pork. Bake or broil meats instead of frying.
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid sodas and other high-sugar drinks.
  • Substitute whole grains for starchy carbohydrates. In other words brown rice, whole wheat bread, pasta, and flour.

If you develop the habit of substituting many of the high-sugar starchy foods for whole grain products, you will find that not only do you feel better, you will find it easier to lose or maintain your weight. Each meal you eat should consist of a lean protein, green or yellow vegetable such as green beans, broccoli, zucchini, or lettuce, and fruit. Throughout the day you want to add grains and enough fat to balance the diet.

Preparing a Balanced Meal

One of the biggest problems many people have is attempting to cook balanced meals after working all day. There are many ways you can save time with meal preparation such as eating more salads and raw vegetables in order to cut down on the preparation and cooking time. If you make use of a slow cooker or prepare your meats ahead of time, you will be able to serve a balanced meal without having to spend much time in preparation and cooking when you arrive home from work.

Snacks are a big issue with many people, and there is nothing wrong with having a healthy snack. Instead of reaching for sweets, reach for some raw vegetables or fresh fruit. The fresh fruit will eliminate your craving for sweets in a natural way without adding additional sugar or other unhealthy ingredients.

Learning to prepare well balanced meals is not an easy task, but it is a rewarding one. Once you learn all of the shortcuts and get into the habit of preparing healthy meals, you will notice a difference in the way you look, feel, act, and think. Healthier eating means a healthier YOU, and that is the goal you want to set for yourself.
