Learn to Enjoy Exercise
You don’t have to hate it to stay
healthy
Many people
have the mistaken idea that exercise has to be boring, or it
involves nothing only endless repetitions of weightlifting,
running, or other types of strenuous activities. These
misinformed people are sitting and complaining about having to
exercise when they could be having fun while staying healthy.
While some people are busy running laps around the track and
complaining, you can be having fun doing your favourite
activity.
Exercise for Fun
If you’re one
of those people who hates exercise, it’s time you began to
rethink your definition of what encompasses exercise. Many
people develop distaste for exercise because they don’t
understand that you can exercise and have fun at the same time.
Instead of complaining about having to exercise, think about some of
the things you enjoy doing:
·
Golfing
·
Tennis
·
Bicycling
·
Swimming
·
Bowling
·
Skiing
· Working in
the garden
· Playing
with your children or dog
·
Volleyball
· Taking a
walk along the beach, in the moonlight, or anywhere else you
may desire
You will note
that none of the things you ordinarily consider “exercise” are
listed, and I did that deliberately to show you how you can
take an activity you love and turn it into a healthy exercise
routine. There is no need to go to the gym and work out unless
that is something you prefer to do. The important thing is to
choose an activity you enjoy doing and turn it into a healthy
exercise routine.
Developing a Fun Exercise
Routine
Exercise
doesn’t have to be boring and frustrating. Nothing says you
have to run laps around the track, ride an exercise bike, do
curls with hand weights, or any of that kind of thing. In fact,
you don’t have to exercise at all—at least not in the usual
way. Instead of “exercising” use the time you spend on your
favourite activity and develop it into a regular routine in
order to achieve the results you want whether it’s aerobic
exercise or resistance training. Any activity you do can be an
exercise if you condition yourself to see it that
way.
One of the
most disliked activities is one that is easily turned into an
exercise routine—housework. Instead of just pushing the vacuum
cleaner and mop, turn it into an aerobic activity such as
dancing or jogging. Not only will you enjoy the work more, you
will be performing an exercise routine at the same
time.
Dancing to Stay Healthy
If you enjoy
dancing, you are already participating in one of the best
aerobic exercises possible. Of course, that’s doesn’t meaning
waltzing and slow dancing but rather dances like the polka,
twist, and other fast movements that allow you to increase your
heart rate and burn calories. The good thing about dancing is
you can perform it in your home while you’re listening to music
or when you go out to a club. There is no special equipment,
you don’t need to go to a health club, you can do it alone or
with a partner, and most importantly, it’s FUN.
If you enjoy
square dancing, you’re going to really gain some exercise with
this type of dancing. In addition to speed, the motions of the
arms and legs allow you to gain more aerobic movements than
other types of dancing. This also holds true for polkas and
other fast and swing dancing. Modern dances include some of
these movements but not as much as the country style dancing
that allows you to have fun while exercising at the same
time.
