Love and Your Health
Connection between love and your health
People love the idea of love. Whether it is giving chocolates and flowers for
Valentine’s Day, attending a wedding, or watching a love story on TV they enjoy it.
But when it comes to love and your health the benefits go
beyond warm feelings, diamond rings, and flowers. It is
the calm, stable form of love that develops with long term relationships that is the most beneficial.
Less Time At The Doctor
When it comes to love and your health, being in love
means fewer doctor visits and shorter stays at the hospital. This could be because human beings are designed to be
social, or it could be that people in stable relationships take better care of themselves. Either way, it
translates into better health.
Better Outlook And Better Blood Pressure
Love is also linked to less depression and substance abuse. Single people
have higher rates of depression than married ones, and those in a happy marriage are less likely to indulge in drug
abuse or heavy drinking. When it comes to love and your health, love is good for
your heart – literally.
Those in a good marriage have the best blood pressure. However, don’t get
married for your heart health alone – those in a bad marriage had the worst blood pressure, worse even than those
who were single.
Less Anxiety, Pain, And Stress
Long term love is better for anxiety. When brain scans of different couples
were analyzed, new couples and long term couples both had activation in the dopamine-reward area. But long term
couples also had activation in the areas associated with bonding as well as less activation in the area of the
brain known for causing anxiety. When it comes to love and your health, those in love feel less pain.
Married couples had fewer complaints of headache and back pain than singles.
And married women subjected to an electric shock experienced less response in the brain while they were holding
their husband’s hand – particularly if the marriage was a happy one. It is also thought that those in a committed
relationship have an easier time managing stress. This could be because of the support of someone else to assist
you with coping.
A Better immune system, Better Healing, And Longer
Lifespan
When it comes to love and your health, love strengthens your immune system.
So whether you are fighting the common cold or flu or something as serious as depression, having the positive
emotions associated with love will help keep your immune system stronger. They say that time heals all wounds, but
love helps to heal them faster. Happily married couples healed twice as fast from blister wounds as married couples
that were in an unhappy relationship.
Married people live longer. There are numerous reasons for this, including
the mutual support, financial benefits, and often the support of children. But it is also thought that feelings of
isolation and loneliness could cause a higher death rate among single people.
Happiness
Lastly, when it comes to love and your health the greatest
benefit is better happiness. This happiness can increase the quality of any relationship.
