Low Sodium Diet
Lower Your Salt and Watch Your Weight and Blood Pressure Drop
I figured that with my high blood pressure, a low sodium diet could be just what I needed. Not only did I need to lose weight but I also needed to improve my health.
I had always lived in what I thought was a normal range for salt intake. I was very wrong. The recommended maximum for sodium consumption is 2.4 grams per day. I was getting far more than that.
In fact, I had no idea that most of the foods I ate contained many grams of sodium. I was not much into fresh foods so most of what I ate was processed or canned. These foods are the highest in salt content you can get. I was really in for a huge change in diet for sure.
The first major change I had to come to terms with my new low sodium diet was the actual food I ate. I really had to rethink how I bought groceries. I had always tried to save money by buying canned goods for cheap.
My splurges were frozen meals that were fast to make. All of these items are saturated with sodium. I probably got a year’s worth in one day with the garbage I was eating.
On the low sodium diet I made sure to buy fresh when I could. I know it is more expensive, but I really needed to do it for my health.
Another great way to get enough food and make your grocery dollar last farther is to buy low sodium frozen veggies.
When it comes to meats and dinners, you want to buy as many fresh meals as possible. If you have to do frozen meals, only do so in moderation and make sure they contain the least amount of salt as possible. I found my low sodium diet was easy to follow as soon as I was able to get used to the way I had to shop. It was not as bad as I thought it would be, nor as expensive. I found that the frozen dinners cost just as much as having fresh foods. I was trading not having to cook with freshness. The food was actually better too. I have to say that it really did work as my blood pressure improved in a matter of weeks. I was able to actually lower my medication level.
While not everyone can cure high blood pressure with a low sodium diet, I was able to get a very good grip on mine. I totally recommend this diet for anyone struggling with hypertension or have a family history of it.
While it may take some getting used to, you will thank yourself that you did it. There is nothing better than eating right and feeling healthy. In just a few easy adjustments you can find that not only do you eat better, you feel better too.
