Making Time to Walk for Your Health
Enjoy a healthy walk
Why don't we like to walk anymore? For years nutritionists
and doctors have told us about the benefits of walking yet many people still have the tendency to avoid it. It's
the cheapest and easiest of the aerobic exercises, and it requires no special equipment or locality.
In spite of all its benefits, we still can't seem to find time for this
simple but healthy exercise. It's time each of us evaluated our time management to find
time to improve our health by walking.
Get Up a Few Minutes Earlier in the Morning
You may think you have no time in the morning to take a walk, but if you get up even fifteen minutes earlier
in the morning and take a walk before you begin work or your daily routine, you will feel much better all day. In
addition to giving you the boost of energy you need for the day, exercising first thing in the morning gets your
metabolism off to a quick start.
Park Farther Away from the Store or Office
One of the easiest ways to fit a walk into your daily routine is to stop
choosing the closest parking spot when you go shopping or work. We have become accustomed to parking right in front
of the office or the store so that we don't have to work as far, but that isn't the best thing for our health. Of
course, if you park in a garage in your building it will be more difficult to park farther away, but you can
develop the habit of parking farther away from the steps.
Use the Steps Instead of the Lift
We have become lazy, and our failure to walk the shortest distances has made
us a country of overweight people along with the United States and Canada. It's easier to use the lift than to walk
up the stairs, but the truth is, learning to walk up a few flights of stairs daily will help keep you in shape. It
isn't much but will make a big difference in the process of burning calories.
Take a Walk During Lunch
Instead of going to the lunchroom, local fast food place, or sitting at your
desk during lunch, go out and take a walk. Even if your lunch is only
half an hour, you can fit in ten to fifteen minutes of walking. If you have a job where you can eat lunch at your
desk, eat before you go on your lunch break and use the time to walk. The important thing is to walk a half hour to
an hour every day, even if you have to break it up into small chunks of time.
Walk the Dog at a Brisk Pace
For those who are dog owners, one of the easiest ways to get into the habit
of walking at a faster pace is to take your evening walk when you go to walk your dog. Instead of taking a
leisurely walk, pick up the pace so that you are closer to the speed your dog wants you to walk.
Making the Time to Walk is Important
Instead of making excuses for not having time to walk, look for other ways to
make time. No matter how busy you are, you can fit in a ten to fifteen minute walk several times a day. For those
who work in huge office buildings, just walk to the other end of the hallway a few times a day. Certainly those who
work on their feet want to use their breaks to sit down and relax, but they are already walking—the rest of us who
have become accustomed to driving everywhere are the ones who need to make time to
walk.
