When I first saw the Neanderthin diet, I truly thought it was a joke. The idea that you can eat a diet based on what the Stone Age people ate before what was available prior to the development of agrarian societies was just crazy. If I was to eat like a cave man I would then be lean, strong, and healthy, according to the author. The diet claims my body was meant to eat like a cave person, eating raw forms of food. While it does say you can cook your food, the diet does try to persuade you to eat raw and like back in the Paleolithic times. Something about this diet just did not sit right with me. The basis for this Neanderthin diet is that if you eat like the Paleolithic people, you will be thin and disease free. I have a hard time believing a people that became extinct were overly healthy individuals. The author somehow feels that they were slim, strong, with perfect teeth and eyes, and disease free unlike the societies we live in today. The idea is people did not eat processed foods filled with preservatives and pesticides like today. Everything they ate was truly organic and fresh. With this type of diet you would eat nothing but freshly killed meats, plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, and roots. This would give you all you need in the way of vitamins and minerals. It is believed that diets like this are and were encoded into our genes. I am not completely sold, although I do think eating organic can really be better for you. The weight loss part of the Neanderthin diet is that it is high in protein and low in carbs. This combination is how you lose the weight. High protein foods are harder to digest and sit in your stomach longer. This makes you feel full for a longer time and so you eat less. Also, cutting down on high sugar carbs also keep your body from storing more fat. I have found that at least this part of the diet is beneficial. The only issue with this diet is that free range and fully organic foods are very expensive. While I do not mind buying better quality foods, I could not afford to eat that way every day. Over all, the Neanderthin diet can work to help you lose weight. But, over all, there are plenty of other diets that are very similar in principle that do not cost as much to do or maintain. While eating 100% organic is a wonderful theory, most people cannot afford to do this. I would recommend looking into other high protein diets and skipping the cave man experience. Unlike in Paleolithic times, fresh foods are way too expensive. I lost some weight, but could not afford to keep buying what was required. I decided to keep searching for more affordable and easy to follow diets. One that was friendlier on my wallet. Trust that you found this Neanderthin Diet article useful.
