Reducing Salt Helps With Weight Loss
from Lose Weight Reviews

Benefits of salt reduction in the diet

When you reduce your intake of salt, the loss of some excess fluids from your body will cause some weight loss.

In addition, eating more fruits and vegetables will help with some additional weight loss by reducing the calories and sugar you were previously consuming.

The potassium in the fruit and vegetables will also help lower your blood pressure because they help rid the body of excess sodium, which causes fluid retention resulting in weight gain. This explains why when you begin a diet you will lose more weight the first few weeks - you are losing water rather than fat.

Salt in processed foods

Many people have no idea how much of our salt intake comes from processed foods, and many are shocked to discover that processed foods account for eight per cent of the salt we consume. What is even more startling is that this is not just the salty foods that ordinarily come to mind such as bacon and crisps that are the problem, but bread and most breakfast cereals are quite high in sodium.

Foods we would ordinarily consider healthy because they are low in fat and sugar content become unhealthy because they contain high amounts of sodium. None of the so-called “slimming: foods will help your weight loss goals if they contain large amounts of sodium. Unfortunately many of these products are abundant in salt. Many Weight Watchers' leaders tell their groups not to eat the frozen entrees on a regular basis because of the sodium content.

The maximum recommended daily intake of salt for healthy adults is six grams. For those who are overweight, susceptible to fluid retention, pregnant, or suffering from any health condition that may cause fluid retention, lesser amounts of sodium would be beneficial. Six grams of salt per day is just a guideline and should only be followed by those who have no health conditions that require limited amounts of sodium.

Benefits of salt reduction in the diet

Since most people tend to eat far too much salt, they would benefit substantially by reducing the amount of salt they consume daily. Reducing your salt intake provides an abundance of health benefits including the following:

  • Decreased risk for heart disease, osteoporosis, stomach cancer, and stroke because of lower blood pressure
  • For those with high blood pressure, cutting back on salt can help in the body's efforts to return the blood pressure to a normal range
  • As your taste buds adjust to foods with little or no salt, you will begin to notice a difference in the flavour ranges of the food you eat.
  • Reduction or elimination of weight gain caused by excessive salt intake
