Anyone who has ever lost weight knows that maintaining weight loss is a difficult task. The cycle of yo-yo dieting affects more than half of people in North America and parts of Europe on a regular basis, but it doesn't have to continue. There are many ways to avoid the yo-yo dieting syndrome and maintain your weight loss permanently. Read on to find out more. Avoid Diets that Offer Quick Weight LossOne of the first tips to maintaining permanent weight loss is avoiding any diet or weight loss program that promises quick weight loss. With these programs you will achieve weight loss for the short-term, but the weight will quickly return. In most cases, quick weight loss, especially for those who only have five or ten pounds to lose, is nothing more than water weight. Achieving long-term weight loss involves replacing fat cells with lean muscle mass which you can only achieve when you combine healthy eating with an exercise program designed to boost your metabolism. One of the major problems with any quick weight loss program is that it avoids the reason you gained weight in the first place- unhealthy eating. In order to maintain permanent weight loss you must learn to eat differently than you were before you embarked on a weight loss program. In most cases quick weight loss programs only address losing the weight and do not provide any education about maintaining the weight loss. Best Results Come from Eating “Real” Food There are many different weight loss programs on the market today that require you to buy special foods. Although these programs may work over the short-term, when you return to eating regular food, it will be very difficult to maintain your weight loss. Certainly some of them have transitional phases where you gradually return to eating regular food, but if you choose a weight loss program that is based upon eating healthy foods you can prepare at home, you will achieve more success in the long-term and save money as well. Get into the Habit of Exercising Daily During the time you are losing weight, you will develop an exercise routine. If you maintain the same routine when you have reached your goal weight, it will be easier for you to maintain your new weight. During weight loss you must burn more calories than you consume and to maintain your weight you must burn the same amount as you consume. In order to do that you must keep your metabolism in high gear by having an exercise routine that boosts your metabolism. Drink Plenty of Water Water is always the key to weight loss and weight maintenance because it prevents the body from retaining fluids. A lack of water will cause the body to retain fluids and thus cause an increase in your body weight. In fact, it is much better to drink water and avoid high sugar drinks and a great deal of coffee or tea. Eat Healthy Foods One of the best ways to maintain weight loss is consuming healthy foods. Instead of high calorie and high fat proteins and carbohydrates, choose lean protein such as poultry and fish and good carbohydrates that have a low glycemic index. Substitute white rice, bread, and pasta for those made with whole grains such as whole wheat, barley, or oats. Choose low calorie healthy snacks such as raw vegetables and fruits instead of cakes, cookies, and ice cream. That doesn't mean you cannot occasionally indulge in your favourite high calorie foods or desserts, but if you make a treat rather than a routine, you will no longer need to continually diet to lose excess weight.
